“THAT WILLIS IS A creep!” Debbie said, as she helped Jonathan take down the better of the two remaining tents after Eric and Willis left. “I’m sorry your friend Eric made you stay behind with me, but I’m glad he didn’t leave me here with him.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Jonathan said. “I didn’t mean to sound like I didn’t want to help you or anything like that. I was just mad at first because it felt like Eric lost all his trust in me and would rather have a stranger to back him up than me. I didn’t even want Willis riding with us today; that was Eric’s idea, but I guess it was a good thing he came now, because we need all the help we can get. If Willis hadn’t been here, Eric would be going alone, because there’s no way he would leave you out here, and three of us couldn’t fit in that pirogue, so nothing would be any different.”

“And you would still be stuck with me?”

Jonathan shrugged. “It’s not like that. I don’t mind that at all. It’s just that Eric picked Willis over me. But you’re right, he’s a creep and he was being a jerk about the whole thing. I would have decked him right there if Eric hadn’t stopped me, I really would have! Eric was right about not leaving you here with him. I saw the way he was staring at you earlier.”

“I would deck him myself if he tried anything! I know how guys like that are! I’m really glad I don’t have to look at him though, and I appreciate you not leaving me here alone. I’ve been really freaked out ever since I got back and found everyone gone. It was bad enough having to live out in these stupid woods all this time even with my dad and everyone else that was with us. We’ve been stuck out here since the end of summer, and I should be in school right now. This is my senior year, and I’m missing out on it! I’m missing out on everything! I hate it out here, but it was a lot worse being out here by myself!”

“I understand how you feel. I don’t know if things will ever be back like they were, but you don’t have to worry about being alone anymore now. We’ll get you to our new base camp, and Eric’s going to find your Dad and Sam and the others and bring them all there too. We’ll all be fine; I just hate that Vicky’s going to be so worried about me tonight when we were supposed to be back way before dark and now it may be two or three days or more.”

“How long has she been your girlfriend?”

Jonathan had to think a minute before he replied. Life had been a blur ever since that night he’d met Eric Branson in a dark stand of mangroves along the Intracoastal Waterway in Florida. He’d covered a lot
